Why Headshots Matter

Your First Impression

Is Everything.

Your photos are often the first way people experience your brand — before they read a word or meet you in person.

A strong visual presence builds trust, communicates confidence, and helps you stand out in a crowded space.

This isn’t just about taking photos — it’s about creating images that reflect who you are and how you want to be seen.

• Natural light or studio-style setups

• Expression coaching during the session

• Industry-standard formatting & delivery

• Light retouching included

Headshots vs. Branding — What’s the Difference?

Most clients aren’t sure which they need at first — and that’s completely normal.

A headshot is a clean, focused image designed to present you in a simple and confident way. It’s perfect for LinkedIn, casting, or a polished first impression.

A branding session goes a step further. It’s about creating a collection of images that show different sides of your personality, your work, and how you want to be seen across your website, social media, and professional platforms.

Think of it this way:

A headshot shows what you look like.

A branding session shows who you are.

I’ll help you decide what makes the most sense based on your goals — so you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Most clients choose a session that includes a few different looks — it gives you flexibility while keeping things simple

I. Let"s Talk

Quite a few sessions start with my complimentary phone consultation. This gives you the opportunity to learn about you and what kind of photographs you're after. I turn I can explain how I work. We can discuss wardrobe, makeup, timing and prices. But if you know what you want, or we've worked together before, we can also organize your session via email.

II. Session Day

On the day of the shoot, you arrive at my beautiful, home studio  in Livingston, NJ.  We'll hang up your clothes. We'll talk through your looks and how we 're going to work. If you've booked a makeup artist, she'll take care of you. Once you're ready for the camera, we take a few test shots and review them on a big screen. This gives us an idea of what kind of angles and lighting will suit the looks we want to do. I can show briefly what happens in the retouch. Then we take some more shots until we're happy with your first look and we're ready to change to do our next look.

III. Image Deliver

A day after the session, you'll receive a gallery with all your shots to review. You then pick the shots you would like me to retouch. I work on these shots and you receive the finished images within 5-10 working days. If you would like prints, I can help you get those sorted as well.

Have questions? Here are a few things most clients ask before their session.

FAQ

Do I have to know exactly what I want before I book?

Not at all—that’s what the discovery call and planning process are for. We’ll work together to define your goals and build a session with intention and purpose.

I’m not comfortable in front of the camera. Will you help?

Yes. Most of my clients are not models. I’ll guide you through posing, expression, and movement so you never feel stuck or unsure what to do.

How do I prepare for my session?

Getting a good night’s sleep, staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol the day before – these are all good tips for arriving at your headshot session ready to look great. But I know life gets in the way. If you’re fitting this into a hectic schedule, just follow my downloadable PDF on what to wear, show up, and let me do the rest. It really doesn’t need to be stressful.

What's the difference between a headshot and a portrait?

Headshots are all about showing your face in a head and shoulders format. They tend to be more straight-on and you’d generally want to look directly into the camera. Headshots sell you. They are your logo, they immediately communicate your brand. They answer the question: “Who am going to see when I open the door?

Portraits tend to show a little more of you. You might be sitting on a chair. The pose, angle and lighting are less restrictive. We can get a little more creative. Half of you might be in the shadow. Or you might be sitting on a horse on the beach (though we’re not going to squeeze that into a studio session). Portraits can also be very close-in. But they try a lot less hard (or not at all) to sell you. They say: “This is me, take it or leave it.”

When doing headshots I often shoot in a half-length format and crop into it for your final headshot. This longer format can already give you an option that feels more like a portrait. But in general, taking portraits is a different creative process. You and I are both working on something special, a unique angle on you.

How long until I receive my images?

Proof galleries are typically delivered within 5–7 business days. Final, retouched images are delivered within 10–14 days after you make your selections.

What does retouching mean?

Retouching portraits is about quality control. Every tiny detail is assessed; if it is distracting, it gets removed. Temporary blemishes, stray eyebrows, cat hairs, etc, are all dealt with so that the focus remains on your expression. All images are optimized for brightness, color and contrast.

Can we photograph my team too?

Yes, team headshots can be added on to your branding session. We’ll talk through what you need during your discovery call.
